BMW Art Cars

The concept for the BMW art cars was introduced by Hervé Poulain in 1975’s Le Mans endurance race.

Hervé Poulain was an auctioneer and racing driver from France. He asked his friend and renowned artist Alexander Calder to paint a rolling canvas on the BMW 3.0 CSL that he would race with in the race.

This is how the collaboration between art and motorsports was born.

BMW has since established this as an annual design competition that has seen many talented artists display their work at it.
