The KZNSA Gallery along with the Durban Film Society collaborates in splitting the year into three, where they showcase international art-house, classic, foreign, experimental and generally interesting films. The setting for the evening is one that allows you to bring your blankets, snacks and vino, and relive the era of the drive-in as the screen flickers under the starry sky. Worry not, if the temperamental Durban weather threatens to rain on our parade, the screenings are moved inside to the tiered café seating.
The films are chosen according to themes, this season, themes were ‘Day Dream’, ‘Childhood Memories’, and ‘ The stuff of Nightmares’. Movies are from all over the place range from French, Japanese and age old 70s and 90s cinema. These are films for those of us who are experimental and have a taste for the alternative.
“The goal of Cinema Thursday Picnic Screenings is to contribute to the development of a culture of film appreciation and filmmaking in Durban, and not for the financial gain of the organizers. However, there are running costs incurred by the Gallery, such as set up costs, and the security guard, which we’d like people to help covering. A collection box is sent around at the screenings into which we’d love for the audience to place their donations should they feel moved to do so” Sarah Dawson
The Screenings are put together by Sarah Dawson who has shown a vast collection of films and has made the screenings the success they are. The screenings are held only on the First and Third Thursday of the month, the next one is on the 7th of October. This seasons films have ranged from Dir. Hayao Miyakazi’s (Japan) Spirited Away, Dir. Marc Caro & Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s (France) City of Lost Children to Dir. David Lynch’s (USA) Eraserhead.
